the moment

History is a subtle music,
developing in long complicated movements
with touches of brash
          which seem significant
          but amount to nothing.
The melody we hear
     is harsher
     than the melody
          we remember hearing.
At the end of the moment
we will not notice its passing
until
     it is long gone.
